At
the 4th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition held three
years ago, he was just a 16 years old boy, although, he played
so dynamically. When his 'Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini' by
Rakhmaninov at the final finished, the audience applauded him
biggest. The member of Tokyo philharmonic orchestra stamped
their feet to extol him, too. Nobody paid attention to him at
the beginning of the competition started, but everybody apprised
him most excellent.
He reviewed the competition, "I was glad to had win the
1st prize. It was an important step for my activity as a musician.
The high quality of the competition was very impressive. To
have had a chance to listen the play by other contestants was
exciting and good experience."
Born in 1984 in Ukraine. He started to play the piano at 7 years
old. Though, his father wanted him to be a singer, so he was
sent an audition for a singer. At the addition, Victor Makarov
found his talent and scouted him when he played the piano. For
two years, he studied both piano and vocal, but finally he chose
piano in contrary to his father's expectation. Now, his parents
have wished him good luck with his choice.
In 1998, he was in a turning point. Makarov, his teacher since
then, was invited to St. Andrews Cathedral School in Australia,
therefore he moved to Sydney with other 4 students of Makarov
and entered this school as a scholar. He studied bases completely.
In 1999, he won the 1st prize both at International Piano Competition
in memory of Horowitz and at Sydney International Piano competition
of Australia, and in 2000, the 1st prize at Hamamatsu International
Piano Competition.
In regards to his 1st prize at Hamamatsu, he affirmed the highest
level of the competition's circumstance tied his best play.
"It was impressive that I could practice calmly, the system
had established, and the management was excellent. Of course
I feel tension but it was not to win the 1st prize definitely.
The big element was I could concentrate to express my own music."
Next year, at his 1st prize memorial recital in Tokyo, Osaka,
and Fukuoka he played Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 14 'Moon
light', Brahms' 'Variation in a theme of Paganini', Rakhmaninov's
'Moments Musicaux' and ohters. Also, his play with Tokyo Symphony
Orchestra and The Orchestra Osaka Symphoniker etc. at their
regular concert appealed his sense of music and his outstanding
talent.
Just as next year, a crisis hit him in May of 2002. For a traffic
accident in Australia, he was operated twice and in a hospital
over a month.
"It was a miracle that I 'd be able to get back a normal
life. My sense of music under big influence of that accident
must be in better direction for my activity from now on. To
express my direction in words was very difficult, therefore,
I did by recording my new album this time." For this 2nd
album, he played Bach's 'Chaconne' (arranged by Busoni), Saint-Saens'
'Dance Marabre', Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 9 'War Sonata'
etc. in June 2003.
As restart of his performances, he came to Japan in last October.
On 31st, at Tokyo Opera City he played pieces of his album.
Before this recital of hisown, at 'Pianists 100' held at Aya-no-kuni
Saitama Art Theater, he played 'All Chopin Program', including
'Fantasia', 'Ballad no. 2' etc., as the 66th pianist.
